I want to talk to you about a very common decorating dilemma: Decorating around existing pieces that we want to keep.
Whether it be a rug, a piece of art, curtains, or a sentimental piece of furniture, decorating around existing pieces has to be one of the most challenging decorating dilemmas.
Last week I told you about my first decorating job. I’m helping a friend redecorate her living room. The living room happens to open up to the entire kitchen and eating area as well, so when decorating the living room, we have to keep the whole space in mind. When decorating open spaces, you can see everything. All at once. And it makes these spaces particularly challenging to decorate. Everything has to flow and have a relatively similar color palette and decorating style.
My friend and her husband are open to changing out most of their accessories, but they wanted to keep one piece of artwork in the eating area. This piece of artwork has many colors, and we had to take this into consideration when choosing a new rug for her living room.
When choosing a rug, I laid out two options:
1. Embrace the colors. (Find a rug that pulls some of the reds, oranges, and greens from the artwork…and maybe brings in my beloved blue).
2. Go with a neutral.
The “Embracing Color” Options:
The “Neutral” Options:
So, which one do you think my friend chose???
This was the winner:
It’s the Auvergne Dove Area Rug from Wayfair. I love, love, love this choice. It’s neutral, but has a fun bold design too!
I can’t wait to share the inspiration board that I built around this rug next week! 🙂
Have a great day!
