I hope you had a great weekend!
One of my favorite parts of the weekend was finishing off this little project on Friday after work!
{When I’m given a few hours to myself and have an idea for a project nothing can stop me.}
I going to make a bold statement:
I think succulents are the most beautiful plants ever.
{Wellll…Ok, I’m already thinking of about 3 kinds of flowers that are just as beautiful…but still.}
When I found this old colander at Goodwill for $2.00, I had immediate plans for it.
Here was her transformation:
1. Like I said, I found this old metal colander at Goodwill. I loved the pattern of the holes, and knew it had a ton of potential!
2. I primed the colander with spray paint {not pictured}, then spray painted two coats of Aqua by Rust Oleum.
3. I drove over to my parent’s lake house and got some gravel from their parking lot. Ha! Succulents need good drainage, so I put a layer of gravel in the bottom of the colander.
4. I used some cactus soil for the next layer.
5. I added the succulents to the colander.
6. For a cool look, I added in gravel to cover the dirt. I think the gravel looks really neat!

My original plan was to keep this outside as a centerpiece on our deck table….
Once I saw how pretty it looked though, I brought it in. It will just get ruined outside!

*Note*
After publishing this post, I got a lot of questions about dirt leaking out of the holes of the colander. I have not had too big of a problem with that, but it was suggested that you line your colander with an old coffee filter before putting dirt in it. I thought that was a great ideda! 😉

Just found your blog and loving the look you’ve created in your home. Of course the aqua grabbed me from the start, love what you’ve done with this colander. So many good ideas here, I’m going to look around some more.

Cute idea. One of those natural fiber basket liners would work great for a liner. You could also mist rather than water the plant inside.
