Let’s just all agree that winter is not our favorite season.
{And if it is your favorite season, well, you’re in the minority…sorry, but somebody had to tell you.}
This winter has been particularly snowy, cold, windy and long.
But with all of the snow this year, it has been particularly beautiful too.
I have been taking in the beauty of the season with my camera.
I’m excited to share some of my favorite winter shots I’ve captured so far and some tips for how to capture great winter photos!
Almost everything contrasts so nicely with the bright, white snow, giving lots of opportunities for dramatic, high-contrast shots.
{High contrast = fabulous black and whites!}
I always prefer slightly off-centered photos.
When the subject is off-centered it’s more interesting to my eye…
When capturing your kids playing outside, pay attention to the background.
If you can only see your neighbor’s ugly siding, then try a different angle…look for snow-covered trees, dramatic bare-branches, etc.

I am so crazy in-love with this photo.
The branches, the snow, the way Miss L. is walking with authority in her cowgirl boots and monkey hat….I could stare at it all day with a big grin on my face.
Who says you have to be outside in the cold to take great winter photos?
I took this photo of a tree in our backyard through our window…and through a wreath hanging in the window.
I took this photo standing in my front doorway.
Zoom in on the details…
Those pine cones, those needles, that snow…oh my.
Zoom out for the panoramic…
That road, those trees, the stillness…oh my.
I really didn’t intend for all of my photos to be in black and white for this post, but
the frigid cold, the stark branches, the bright snow, the still and quiet road, the very essence of winter was captured and enhanced with the black and whites…don’t you think?
